Bike Riding is a Great Fitness Activity for Kids
Moms and dads who want to encourage their children to get up off the couch and away from the television screen and the computer monitor should know that bike riding is a great fitness activity for kids. Riding a bike is an affordable fitness option for most families since used bicycles can be economically purchased at neighborhood garage sales and second hand stores or even borrowed from a friend or family member for the day.
Bike riding gives kids an incentive to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, either alone or with friends. Bicycling offers cardiovascular exercise that not only benefits the health of the heart and lungs but also the muscles and bones of the legs. Riding a bicycle helps kids to develop muscular coordination, strength and overall stamina, all important for achieving fitness.
If a child is learning to ride a bike, keep the initial bike rides on smooth level territory for short periods of time while the child gains confidence and experience. Then more challenging rides can be arranged in order to provide more of a physical workout while riding. If possible, invest in a bike in which several speed levels can be selected in order to gradually provide a more challenging ride to benefit the child’s fitness.
Kids should be outfitted with helmets and the proper footwear whenever bike riding for fitness to ensure their safety in the event of a short stop or a spill from the bike. Children who are introduced to bike riding while small will have found an affordable and enjoyable fitness activity that they can pursue for the rest of their lives.
